Know Your Phone’s Real Return or Buyout Cost

Device agreements are usually sold as a monthly number, but the money that surprises people arrives at the end: a buyout amount, a return deadline, a condition assessment, or a discount that disappears if the plan changes. Upload your phone financing or device return agreement and LeaseScore reads those terms back in plain English with a 0–100 score for cost, fees, restrictions and exit risk.

What phone return plans mean

Carriers and retailers structure device programs differently. Some are straightforward instalment financing where you own the phone at the end. Others defer part of the price to a final payment you can settle by paying a buyout or by returning the device in acceptable condition by a deadline. Others attach the device price to a specific plan tier. None of these are interchangeable, so the terms in your own agreement are what matter.

How the score works

The LeaseScore is a deterministic weighted sum across cost transparency, flexibility and exit, fees and penalties, obligations and restrictions, protection and fairness, and clarity. LeaseScore reviews the uploaded text against a structured rubric and flags potential issues — it does not rate providers or judge whether a program is enforceable.

FAQ

Is a phone return plan the same as financing?
Not always. Programs differ between carriers and retailers: some finance the full device price, some defer part of it to a final buyout or return, and some tie a discount to keeping a specific plan. Your agreement is the only reliable description of yours.
What is a device return option fee?
Some programs charge a fee, or apply a condition-based assessment, when you return the device instead of paying the remaining balance. The amount and the conditions are set out in the agreement.
Does changing my plan cost anything?
In some agreements the device pricing depends on keeping a particular plan or add-on, so downgrading can change what you owe. LeaseScore flags plan-dependency wording it finds in your document.
Can LeaseScore tell me my exact buyout amount?
It reports the buyout and return figures stated in the document you upload. If the agreement expresses them as a formula or refers to a separate schedule, confirm the current number with your provider.
